Red Cross provides assistance in Oak Grove after tornado strikes

The American Red Cross is providing assistance for those affected by a tornado that struck parts of Oak Grove, MO, east of Kansas City, on Monday night, March 6. It opened a shelter at the Oak Grove Civic Center at 2100 South Broadway for those needing a place to stay, food or a place to charge their phones.

On Tuesday, Red Cross disaster assessment teams were in the area to determine the extent and location of damage. Those assessments will help the organization determine how best to meet the needs of people in the community. Plans call for the Red Cross to start distributing clean up supplies on Wednesday.

Many homes were destroyed by the tornado and others were heavily damaged Friends and family members arrived Tuesday morning to start helping those whose homes were damaged to salvage what they could. Work crews also arrived to begin repairs on homes.

Anyone wanting to volunteer to help those affected by the storm are encouraged to call 2-1-1. The Red Cross is working with local partners to identify drop off locations for clothing, food and other donated supplies.

Those wanting to support the Red Cross are urged to make a financial donation contribution by going to redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS.
